Whenever I see that 'Breaking News' logo appear on the TV, I get nervous. I don't like that feeling at all. And today was no exception. What a sad, sad day. I feel for the families of all involved and I wonder if movie-going will ever feel the same.
Thought, blog buddies?

I agree with you Ross on what a sad, sad day it is. I just don't understand how someone can be commit such a senseless and cruel act. It is already changing some ways people go to the movies due to the fact that some cities already have the police outside the theater. Sad to say that it may possibly change the way we go to the movies from now on. Praying for the victims and families along with the city of Aurora.
ReplyDeleteThoughts: I think when tragedies like this happen in the United States, they get so much media coverage that it skews their importance way out of proportion. Case in point: I asked a co-worker today what the biggest mass murder is (of this sort, I meant...where a gunman opens fire on innocent people in a public setting) in history. She had no idea, and was amazed when I told her the answer, which was a man who killed something like 50 people... in Korea! She also hadn't heard of the runner-up in this gruesome sweepstakes, which was some nut case who opened fire on people at a rest stop in Tasmania, killing something like 34 of them. My point here is not to minimize the pain and horror for the families of the victims in Colorado or any of these other massacres; far from it. Rather, I just want to remind everybody that these atrocities have happened, and continue to happen, the world over. What happened in Colorado last night is not a symptom of the "end times; it is not some signal that modern society is sick and spinning out of control and we should be afraid, all of a sudden, of going to a movie.
ReplyDeleteMy prays are going out to the family and friends!
ReplyDeleteBear! Thanks for the history lesson I Wish and pray it
Did not happen anywhere.
Be kind to one other!

So incredibly sad and senseless! And for the news to keep showing the shooter's smiling photo just makes it even more heinous. My heart goes out to everyone...victims, emergency responders, families and the entire community.
ReplyDeleteThank you for respecting the gravity of the moment. You will have us laughing again soon enough.
I feel the same way when I see "breaking news." I will never understand why the NRA defends the position of semi-automatic rifles. A handgun, a hunting rifle, or a rifle for target shooting, while not my thing, I can at least understand. But the only reason for a semi-automatic rifle is to kill as many people as possible as fast as possible. Maybe a SWAT team has need for such a weapon, but why does the NRA fight so hard for the right of your average asshole on the street to possess such a weapon? At 63 years old, I've lived through so many of these types of mass murders and each time I lay the blood at the feet of the NRA.
ReplyDeleteOn a note that I hope will make you smile, I wrote a humorous blog post about you being my fantasy celebrity crush. Yes. This old broad has a crush on you. ;)

countdown: 6 days...
I agree with Whab, it is what I was trying to say but Whab always says it better! :-) This is the exception and not the rule. Continue to live a full and productive life, be happy, it is the best thing we can do to honor the victims AND go see a movie!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Beth
Two friends of mine were shot at the Tucson shootings in January 2011. I've known Gabby Giffords for ten years. Going to a political event is no longer the same for me - I'm always wondering if something will happen. l always wonder about the people who were killed or disabled, maybe they would have become a great leader, an inventer, a loving parent, a wonderful teacher, a person that would affect other's lives. These shootings stop that from happening - a great loss for all of us, for America. Since the Bobby Kennedy's assassination, one million Americans have been killed or committed suicide. This is such a loss of talent for our nation. I mourn with the family and friends of the victims in Colorado. There lives are changed forever. Our lives are changed forever.
ReplyDelete5 days... :)
ReplyDeleteAnd to think I used to fear what creepy crawlers (spiders) were lurking in dark movie theaters. Now add this. No thanks, I'll just watch TV at home. It's sad the alleged killer wasn't able to reach out for help or that someone didn't notice that he was in some kind of dire need before he did this. RIP all those who passed & Godspeed recoveries to those who were injured & the families & friends of those who will forever remember this tragedy.
ReplyDeleteGod bless these families and those no longer with us. This guy is an evil lunatic! We still live in the greatest country on the face of the earth. We need to carry on. A brother of a murder victim said it best...let's not let the name of this evil man overshadow the names of the victims. The victims deserve their life stories to be told, not the assasin. Hug your loved ones and tell them how much you love them. God bless us all...
ReplyDeleteJayne, Beth, and RIchard in Tucson: I worked with Mark Kelly on a project several years ago, so I've been a big supporter of Gabby Giffords for a long time. What happened to her and the others that day was... well, there are no words. And while there are those who don't believe we should be getting political over the most recent Colorado tragedy, I'm not one of them. Hence, I posted the following two comments on FB today.
ReplyDeleteYou miss the mark every single time. While it's the Dems and libs who believe in killing innocents (BABIES THRU ABORTION), you also believe in saving murderers from the death penalty. How messed up is that. Your misguided compassion continues to puzzle me. I can never wrap my brain around your illogical conclusions.
DeleteAGAIN, THIS IS NOT ABOUT ABORTION BUT YOU ALWAYS GO SOMEWHERE ELSE WITH YOUR POSTINGS??? THIS IS ABOUT THOSE WHO DIED AND ESPECIALLY THE EVIL MAN THAT SHOULD BE PUT TO DEATH WHO MURDERED ALL THOSE INNOCENT PEOPLE.
Please, get a clue!!
If this is about those who died, Edie, and I've missed the mark with my postings, then let me try to be more direct. Those people in Colorado wouldn't have been as likely to be placed in harm's way if evil men such the perpetrator of this massacre weren't able to waltz in to the nearest gun shop and purchase an assault rifle. Yet, we have the NRA and all these Republicans in Congress who defend to the death the right of Americans to have easy access to these obscene instruments of mass murder. Compare that to Democrat Diane Feinstein, one of the only elected federal politicians in the country who has taken on the NRA and tried to limit access to these weapons of mass destruction. I'll be supporting Senator Feinstein in the fall election, Edie, in part because of her leadership role in trying to limit the availability of assault weapons to the general public. What about you?
DeleteAmen Whabbear. The fact is unfortunately that both parties have been reluctant to take on the NRA. Even Obama gets an "F" across the board from the Brady Commission on gun control. I was heartened, however, to hear him today speak strongly in favor of sensible gun control legislation. It's just ludicrous that someone could legally build up the arsenal of not only assault weapons, but 6,000 rounds of ammunition purchased online. It's insane. And Edieoho, I'm not sure where you're coming from. Did Whabby say anything about the death penalty? He was simply pointing out the hypocrisy of supposed pro-life legislators refusing to support any type of gun control.
DeleteWhich politicians are, on the one hand, strong supporters of dismantling Roe V. Wade in any way they can because human life is sacred from the point of conception, and on the other hand, equally strong supporters of allowing people to own weapons whose only purpose is to take the life of large numbers of human beings in as short a time as possible? Remarkably, the answer is: Most of the Republicans in Congress right now.
ReplyDeleteWhich politicians are strongly against any legislation that would curb public access to firearms because that would be contrary to the core value of the United States - individual freedom and liberty - while remaining steadfast in their opposition to giving people the freedom to marry the person of their choice? Disgustingly and hypocritically, the answer is: Virtually all of the Republicans in Congress right now.
ReplyDeleteMy heart was sad when I heard of the shooting. A 6 yr.old lost her life, a son, a daughter, a mother, a father lives were all taken within seconds of each other. The victims that were injured will have the scars from this incident embedded into their thoughts for the rest of their life. Why would someone go to this level of not placing any regard on life, I can not answer that. I can say that our legislation need to get off their asses and changed the laws about these assault guns/rifles can not be sold to the common person. The only people that would need a clip type gun that would give continuous fire, would be our military or police. NO ONE ELSE. I believe our legislation should also banned the sale of bullet clips in the amount that this individual purchased over the internet (6000).
ReplyDeleteIt is your voice, my voice and we need to have our voices heard concerning these assault weapons. Too many people have died, it is all of our responsibilities to change this from happening again. Not talking about it, it is time to do something about it. No one should be allowed to purchase a gun of this magnitude that took the lives of 12 people and hurt over 50 plus people again. Yes, we can express love and our condolences to the people in Colorado, but we need to do more all across United States to change the laws. I believe in the 2nd Amendment, to bear arms. Our Bill of Rights did not say assault weapons.
#4 days left...is everybody ready???
ReplyDeleteEdieoho, your comment that James Holmes is an evil lunatic saddens me. My guess is that he is mentally ill, quite possibly paranoid schizophrenic. This is a tragedy all around. That the massacre happened, and that this young man had an untreated, serious mental illness.
ReplyDeleteAfternoon Everybody!
ReplyDeleteRoss! Are you there yet! :O) Wooh! xo
Four days and counting Garv!

I have friends here in Texas who are collecting assualt rifles for the end of the world that is predicted this year in December. The father is buying his 16 year old son a pile of guns. This boy doesn't have a normal life. My opinion is that a huge ban on assualt rifles should be put into effect ASAP. Everyone I know who lives in Texas owns guns because all of the gang bangers have guns. It's a damn shame to live this way. I keep 2 loaded guns in the house. If I walk my dog at night I carry a taser stun gun with 5 million volts. It will lay out an intruder. I also have mace 10% pepper spray on a key chain jusat incase some jerk doesn't take no for an answer when they pan handle and get in my face and say lady give me a dollar. Young punks do that and they think they can initimadate people. Well not me!

BTW nice to see you all again! I don't have a url so I put up my nephew's.
